Here is a list of resources related to Veganism that I have found interesting, educational and helpful. I will update this list as I discover more helpful resources myself, but I am only going to recommend resources here that I have read or watched personally. Feel free to leave a comment with suggestions.
Documentaries:
"Animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, water consumption and pollution, is responsible for more greenhouse gases than the transportation industry, and is a primary driver of rainforest destruction, species extinction, habitat loss, topsoil erosion, ocean “dead zones,” and virtually every other environmental ill."
(Available on Netflix)
This 15 minute mini documentary examines the fishing industry and exposes the cruelty it can impart on the fish and the ways in which it depletes wildlife. (Warnings for graphics images of animal cruelty)
(Available on YouTube)
In this documentary an injured athlete goes in search of the best diet for recovery and uncovers shocking truths about the impact that eating meat and dairy has on our bodies.
Books:
In this book Jonathan Safran Foer, sets out to find answers to the question ‘Is it right to eat animals?’. The brilliance of this book is that it combines hard facts and undeniable truths with metaphors and reflections on society. This is something that is rarely seen in the vegan community, a community built on hard rational choices and that is what makes this book unique. This book does ultimately provide a clear argument for vegetarianism but that is not its primary aim. Instead, its primary aim, is to leave every stone, both rational and emotional unturned. The author asks ‘Is free range farming better?’, ‘Is anyone in this country producing meat without unnecessary cruelty?’ but he also asks, ‘Is it human to eat meat?’ and ‘Would it spoil traditions to not eat turkey at thanksgiving?’
This book is about climate change but it really about human reluctance to act even though the facts tell us to. In this book Jonathan Safran Foer reminds the reader of what is known to be the single biggest thing a person can do to reduce their carbon footprint and then spends the rest of the book trying to reason with the audience (and with himself) to take action. Similarly to his previous non fiction book, Eating Animals, the value of this book lies in Jonathan’s refusal to face facts without considering emotions and human psychology. This book discusses many historical events including the Holocaust and the moon landing, using them to explain human rational and to imagine what the possible outcomes for our future might look like.
“I made this e-book with the goal of creating a resource that vegans can use to help them learn how to debunk and argue against the most common excuses that people use to try and justify not going vegan and continuing to harm animals. Knowledge is power - and there really is not one single argument against veganism whatsoever. So once you have the knowledge, which I hope this e-book provides, the power is in your hands and nothing is stopping you from planting seeds in the minds of your family, friends and anyone else you discuss veganism with." - Earthling Ed
YouTube Channels:
What I love about this channel is that Ed always stays calm and factual during debates but that he is always challenging people on their uninformed opinions. He has some incredibly detailed resources and is very active.
